Misleading Statistical Conclusions and Offender Profiles: There Is No Typical Perpetrator

In 2009, Martin Luther University in Wittenberg conducted a representative survey among security managers of 500 companies operating nationally and internationally. Forty-one per cent of respondents reported having been affected by economic crime at least once; by 2015, this figure had risen to around 53 per cent – and the trend continues upward. According to the study, a so-called typical offender profile emerges: male, aged between 40 and 50, with over ten years in the company, employed in middle management. If only it were that simple…

Warehouse crime is an offence most often committed by employees in lower income brackets. The methods vary: the laptop that disappears in a backpack, the TV that should be on the delivery truck according to the waybill but is instead in the employee’s vehicle, the video camera allegedly not delivered by the manufacturer. The offence rate is particularly high in external storage facilities: the further the warehouse is from the company premises and management’s sphere of influence, the easier it is for offenders to misappropriate goods. Verification measures, such as those conducted by Kurtz Investigations Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein, are indispensable in many cases. Economic crime has many faces – no case is identical to another. Only extensive experience and qualified investigations with the appropriate investment of time and technology can provide effective solutions. Our Kiel detectives are at your service in all cases of theft and embezzlement by employees. Please describe your concern via email at kontakt@kurtz-detektei-kiel.de or through our contact form.

In Kiel, freight crime is naturally closely linked to the sea, maritime cargo transport, and the general shipping industry. Shipyards also belong to the potential victims of theft and embezzlement.

Offenders Work Hand in Hand – Effective “Methods” Not Limited to Regular Employment

Delinquent warehouse employees sometimes collaborate with colleagues responsible for transport – that is, warehouse crime combined with transport crime. For example, a warehouse employee is tasked with preparing a customer order of ten devices. Instead, he loads eleven devices onto the delivery vehicle. The driver delivers ten devices to the customer, while the eleventh device is sold and the driver and warehouse employee share the proceeds. These losses usually only become apparent during an inventory check, and whether they are then classified as property offences is questionable.

If you notice unusual or unexplained inventory discrepancies, or have initial suspicions due to another incident, our qualified corporate detectives in Schleswig-Holstein can provide clarity. We observe the suspect(s), trace the whereabouts of the goods, ensure the return of stolen property, and apprehend the offender(s) with legally admissible evidence. Professional and, above all, discreet conduct goes without saying. You are welcome to contact Kurtz Detective Agency Kiel and Schleswig-Holstein for a non-binding consultation: +49 431 3057 0053.
