With 30,545 inhabitants (2023), Rendsburg appears to be a seemingly quiet small town. Yet, in a significant statistic, it even “outperforms” Frankfurt am Main in crime. Rendsburg is the "true capital of crime" (Focus Magazine); nowhere else in Germany are there more offences per inhabitant (as of 2011). Around 45 percent of crimes are thefts, followed by bodily injury and robbery offences at about 25 percent each. For perpetrators, the good transport links via the A7 and A210 motorways and rail connections to Hamburg, Kiel, Berlin, Cologne, even Munich, and northwards to Denmark offer ideal escape routes.
According to their own statements, the residents of Rendsburg no longer feel safe: robbery, theft and burglary cause them particular concern. As everywhere in Germany, staff cuts are being made among law enforcement, public police presence is declining, and crime increases as a result. Our detectives in Rendsburg protect you proactively from offences by inspecting your home or property for security gaps, developing a security concept, and implementing technical precautions. Until 1990, the Bundeswehr and NATO were the largest employers in Rendsburg; in the 21st century, the economy is mainly supported by manufacturers of construction machinery and building components, the Nobiskrug shipyard, and the telecommunications provider freenet AG. The high overall crime rate also affects local companies. In addition to burglaries and property damage, companies face issues such as corporate data theft, bribery and unfair competition by rival companies, as well as offences committed by their own employees. Many of these crimes are not reported by the affected companies because, besides financial losses, there is also a risk of image and reputation damage, and the police often lack the necessary discretion when dealing with sensitive issues.

One of the most frequently used transport links in the surrounding area is the Rendsburg High Bridge over the Kiel Canal, one of only eight active transporter bridges worldwide. In September 2013, it was designated a "Historic Landmark of Engineering in Germany" by the Federal Chamber of Engineers. It is the landmark of Rendsburg and one of the most impressive engineering monuments in Schleswig-Holstein and all of Germany. In January 2016, it was severely damaged in a collision with a cargo ship and remained at the southern pier until March; as of April 2016, it is at the maintenance yard of the Water and Shipping Authority. Whether and when ferry traffic will resume is unknown. Rendsburg’s mayor Pierre Gilgenast and the Office for Monument Protection hope for repairs to preserve it as a landmark.
